Food is where Thailand rewards adaptability: identical nutrition can cost 40 baht or 400 baht depending on choices you make daily.

Monthly food budgets that actually happen
- ~6,000 THB ($170): near-total street/market eating — doable, gets monotonous
- 10–14k THB ($290–400): mostly Thai venues + weekly western meal + groceries — the sustainable sweet spot
- 18k+ THB ($515+): frequent western dining, delivery apps, imported groceries
Eating HEALTHY cheaply (the part most guides skip)
- Protein trap: many cheap dishes are carb-heavy with little protein. Add a fried egg (+10 THB) or extra chicken (+20–30 THB) to balance macros
- Vegetable gap: stir-fried veggie dishes (pad pak) exist everywhere at 50–70 THB — order them deliberately
- Sugar alert: drinks come sweetened by default; say "mai sai nam tan" (no sugar) and expect puzzled smiles anyway
- Oil caution: reused frying oil is common at the cheapest stalls — rotate venues, favor wok-over-steam preparations
- Markets > convenience stores: fresh produce from morning markets costs half of 7-Eleven/CVS prices and tastes better
Grocery strategy for mixed eaters
- Local markets (fresh produce/protein) + Big C/Lotus for staples = lowest basket
- Villa Market/Foreigner-oriented stores: 30–60% premium for comfort foods — treat as occasional, not habitual
- Cooking at home saves money only if you actually cook; many find Thai venues undercut home cooking after gas/electric/time
